A retro 3D space explorer for procedurally generated star systems with wireframe graphics and AI-crafted planetary lore
@unknown: Elite, written and developed by David Braben and Ian Bell, was originally published by Acornsoft for the BBC Micro in September 1984. Its open-ended gameplay and revolutionary 3D graphics led to ports on virtually every home computer, earning it classic status and genre-defining acclaim. The title derives from achieving the top combat rating of "Elite" - something I never managed despite countless tries. One early challenge is docking onto a space station. Without a docking computer (a purchasable upgrade for your ship), it was a major ordeal that I failed many times. The main objectives of the game are to explore, trade and fight against enemy ships or go on bounty hunts in an endless universe. Despite the high difficulty - not just docking, but surviving - it was, and still is, a brilliant game. One major "woohoo" moment that I remember was when finally being able to purchase that very powerful military laser, obliterating enemy ships in the blink of an eye! Video shown is the C64 version, which was released in 1985 and set new standards in terms of 3D graphics and an open world.
